Boxer Dog History and Background Introduction

tigger2
Hi there! I'm Tigger, and I will discuss with you my boxer dog history.

Our roots come from Central Europe and we have quite a history behind us as you will see.

First though, let me give you some personal boxer dog history on me.....

My owners rescued me when I was 2 years old. I was the first Boxer they had owned and we went though quite a learning curve with one another. Being the only Brindle furry kid, I spent time alone with them until they found Buffy. She was my mate, although we never had any children together. I was a serious pup, and never played much, but I loved my family.

Buffy kept me young at heart, because she was a younger woman. She wanted to play and have fun, but I told her that I had to protect the family. She gradually got me to loosen up some though. We used to have a game we played together, I would get a bone or toy, not because I wanted it, but because I wanted her to try and get it. I would lay with my head on it and if she tried to get it, I would let out a menacing growl at her, she would ignore me, and take her front paw and put in on the item and turn her head and pull it away from me. Of course if I had really wanted it, she would not have gotten it, but I always let her have it, I enjoyed the game.

Enough about me on to our boxer dog history.......

We originated from Germany over 120 years ago from the Brabanter Bullenbeisser which can be traced back to Belgium as working dogs, but through the years we have evolved into the fun loving breed you know and love.

It it believed the we were originally used to hunt wild boar in Germany, hence the our ears were cropped to prevent injury and tears from encounters with the boars. Our strong and agile build was an asset during this early time.

As time moved on people discovered we made an outstanding family pet always eager to please our owners. Early in the 1800's the Brabanter Bullenbeisser were bred with an early form of English bulldog and the Boxer was born. A lot of my early ancestors were white, much like the white boxer of today. I believe we got our name from our instincts to use our front paws when we play and fight.

By 1895 the German Boxer Club was formally organized and our breed standard was described to help define what the Boxer should look like. In 1925 the white boxer dog was no longer accepted as a proper color for us. I believe the reasoning for this change is that if the we were to be used for police work we would need to be a darker color as to not be seen at night.

Boxers were introduced the the U.S. around the turn of the century, but we really didn't become popular until the 1950's.

We have seen many changes throughout the years, and I'm sure many more will come. As our boxer dog history has evolved, we have become one of the most loved of the canine species.
