Boxer Dog Barking

chels16
Boxer dog barking can sometimes be a problem, if your boxer barks at everything. I did not bark much, but when I did, Mom and Dad listened.

Some boxers (and dogs in general) will bark just to bark or will bark for attention. In order to help your boxer stop the excessive barking you must learn to teach him when it's acceptable to bark and when it's not.

Mom and Dad used two commands on Obie and I when they did not want us to bark, one was "SHHH" and the other was "It's OK."

The SHHH command was used with placing your index finger over your mouth like you would do your human kid. The SHHH sound would get our attention and then they would say, "It's OK."

During the training process when we were pups, Mom and Dad would give us treats and praises when we followed the direction. As we got older, usually we just got the praises as we understood what they wanted.

Some dogs may be more difficult to train than we were, and may take more time in the training process. Others may take specialized training.

The key to stopping your boxer dog barking is to understand why he is barking in the first place. There are several reasons that your boxer dog barking may be excessive as we bark for many reasons. We bark when we are lonely, scared, bored, excited, defending our territory, hungry, hot, cold, wanting attention and when we are asserting our dominance.

You must determine which one of the reasons above is causing your boxer to bark and try to change the environment or eliminate the reason for your boxer dog barking. Whatever the reason is, you must understand you can't expect your boxer to stop barking all together. This is the way we communicate as well as our body language, just as people do. Just as some people talk too much, some boxers bark too much.

If you think your boxer dog barking is caused by boredom, try giving them some toys or sound in the house, remember Tiggers story of what he did when he was bored.

Obie would bark sometimes just to get attention and still does. But not excessively and he understands when mom or dad use the SHHH sound that he is not to keep on barking.

There are electronic collars (both sonic and shock) that claim to work, but Mom and Dad do not recommend the use of them. We are not sure how humane they are and frankly do not care to put one on to find out! They work on the principle that a boxer will understand when they bark, they get a shock or an unpleasant sound. It does nothing to address the root cause of the boxer dog barking.

Barking excessively is not normal. It is a sign of other issues. Understand those issues and you can help your boxer stop the excessive barking.
