Boxer Dog Background
My ancestor the Brabanter Bullenbeisser of Central Europe, could be found in the area that now covers the countries of Belgium, Holland, Germany and Poland over 100 years ago. No one knows how the Brabanter Bullenbeisser arrived in Europe or how long it has been there. What they do know is the earliest form of the Bullenbeiser had many variations. This is because as new pups arrived, they were used to breed if they had traits that were wanted by their owners. The Bullenbeisser slowing began to take on the traits it's owners wanted. As we move forward in time we get a clearer picture of our boxer dog background..... The dogs got their name Bullenbeisser (Bull biter) the same way the English Bulldog got its name, by the type of work that they performed. They were working dogs, built stocky and strong. They were bred to fight bulls and bears. Then is the early 1800's a German writer wrote that a different kind of Bullenbeisser, of medium size, were being established. He says these dogs were hunting and baiting bears, and made good watchdogs, had short noses with black muzzles, protruding lower jaws and was black and yellow striped in color. It is believed this was before the English Bulldog came to Germany and introduced the white gene to the Bullenbeisser. Brabanter Bullenbeisser got their name from the province Brabant in northeast Belgium and was a smaller Bullenbeisser. The Brabanter Bullenbeiser was used as cattle dogs as well in the 1800's. Around this same time an early form of the British Bulldogs was bred with the Brabanter Bullenbeisser and thus the white gene was introduced into the boxer. It is generally accepted that the smaller Bullenbeisser bred in Brabant, together with the British Bulldog, is the ancestor of the modern Boxer dog. The Bullenbeisser cannot be found today. It's believed they disappeared at the end of the 1800's, when we the boxer gained popularity in Germany. We filled the role of the Bullenbeisser, and the Bullenbeisser, well he no longer exists. My boxer dog background and history has many variations, but this is the most common and the one generally accepted.
