All About Boxer Dogs and their Traits

boxer dog tiggers tongue

I am going to show you all about boxer dogs.....first and foremost....

Boxer Dogs love to have fun!!!

We love to play and interact with our human pack. You see, we are a pack oriented society, so my family is my pack. We love to see our family when we have been apart and get very excited when everyone gets reunited. If we don't get enough attention from our pack we can be mischievous.

I have a little story to tell you about one of my.....uh...mischevious moments when I wanted at little more attention than I was getting.

Just read this little story....

I remember when mom and dad were working a lot and not home much. I would get soooo bored. So I decided I would let them know I wasn't happy about staying by myself all day. So while they were at work, I would get in the trash can and just rip the paper up all over the kitchen. Boy it was fun...while I was doing it. But after it was over, I knew I was in trouble. I never worried about them spanking me, as they never hit me...ever, but I knew I would get scolded and made to feel ashamed.... and I was, but I got attention. Anyway.....

I knew when dad would get home and so I would hide behind the bar you see in the picture, and not come out. Dad would come home and sound so hurt and disappointed in me. I was so ashamed! He would finally say it is OK. Man was I relieved. Mom and Dad finally started giving me more attention in the morning before they left and would leave the TV or Stereo on for me. With the sound I did not feel so alone and so I did not get into trouble.

Anyway, if you must leave your boxer dog alone during the day, give us something to do, sounds, toys, a playmate, etc. to help keep us occupied. We are a very energetic bunch and need room to play and run.

We need to be busy and a good chew toy is a great way to relieve tension and prevent any damage to items you don't want us to chew on!. I love a good rawhide bone to chew on, but we can get choked on them sometimes. Mom and Dad did not let me have one unless they were home, but they let me have the kind that were good for my teeth and easily digested if swallowed.

A fenced yard and a good doggie door is great, we can come and go as we please and we never have to cross our legs and hold our bladder until Mom or Dad have time to take us out.

Doggie doors are a great investment for your boxer and you. If your yard is fenced a doggie door allows your boxer to come and go as he or she pleases. But not all doggie doors are the same. Look for one with double flaps and magnetic closures. The door should also have a steel slide in door for security.

There are many styles of doors, electric that are opened by a transmitter on your dogs collar, sliding door unit for installation in sliding doors, and manual units as described above. We always had the manual units, but your family may want something different.

Boxers require a large door when full grown, so plan now if your boxer is a puppy.

We like a regular schedule, we know what to expect, just like humans do. A warm fluffy bed is nice. But be warned, we do have....uh... gas, to put it politely, and when we do, you know it!

Doggie beds have a huge range in size and price. Mom and Dad made our bed for almost nothing using eggcrate foam, old blankets and a washable comforter.

We are a smart bunch, (modest) and learn fast. We are very alert and protective of our families, although we are not aggressive if you treat us with love and care. We get along with other animals, and for the most part we are friendly. We can be clowns and give you many, many laughs throughout our lifetime.

Some of our other boxer traits:

Laying on our back with our feet in the air, not a care in the world.

Doing the "Kidney Bean Dance" when we are happy!

We have a woo-woo song.

We love to run a full blast around the back yard, just for fun!

Rest our heads on your lap, like it is to heavy to hold up!

Happiness!

Snoring and or dreaming when we sleep!

Giving guilt trips!

Laying flat on the ground with our back feet stuck out behind us!

Won't swim!

Our unique butt wiggle when we are happy!

and Big Slobbery Kisses!

Boxer Clucks when we want something.

We are not well suited for people who cannot spend time interacting with us. Because we are a rather large breed, we are not lap dogs, although we would love to be! We need room to run, so small spaces can be a problem unless you can take us for long walks and we can get plenty of exercise.
